Down Memory Lane

Camel's back road should aptly be renamed memory lane. It's located in the town of Mussorie, in Uttarakhand. This road is a 4 km stretch between "Library point" and the "Mall".

The distance might seem like a long haul when you start your walk but, like I said, it's a place where you create memories. The road is so named because it is a winding lane with humps like a camel's back. You can opt for a horse ride or an auto ride but you should certainly do this walk once, to experience all it has to offer.

On one side of the road you can feel the roughness of the hills with your hand and on the other side is a ravine (not too deep though). Before starting your walk you have the option of buying fresh candy floss from the vendors at Library Point. This is not some packaged candy floss, but you can see them churning it fresh for you.

I have so many memories of this road. I have walked this lane alone and with my friends. There was this time when my friends and I just got drawn to this particular property like moles to a truffle. Not something to be really proud of but it looked so inviting and irresistible. All we had to do to get in was jump over a very low gate.

Getting to that gate was however the main hitch. We tried walking gently down the rough path but we all slipped one after the other and landed directly at the foot of the gate. We had absolutely no idea about what lay on the other side of the gate but once we crossed over it left us completely breathless. It was a graveyard nestled in the heart of a boundless garden. There were so many graves spread around but all we saw was the beauty that lay there. The Camel's Back Cemetery has graves that date back to 1830s in that place. As we stood there rooted we realized we were in a place of pure tranquility.

Moving further along the road you can see the snowcapped mountains of the Garwhal Himalyan range. This seemed like the ideal place to discuss our future plans in all seriousness. The time and distance flies by as we walk along humming old songs from movies. If you have no company this is also a seraphic place for spending some time alone.

Once you complete your walk you enter the Mall (market) side of the town. There are coffee houses lined up serving hot chocolate and sandwiches. I never forget to proceed to the small shops that sell homemade chocolate rocks and marshmallows that melt in your mouth. Also their hot chocolate fudge must not be missed.

I'm heading to Mussoorie again this summer to create new memories with new friends. Join me if you will in my expedition and we will treat ourselves to hot chocolate fudge after a not so long walk of 4 kilometers.

P.S. Mussoorie is situated 60 kilometers from Dehradun. Dehradun is connected to Delhi by air, train and road transport services.
