Lecce: Puglia's Baroque Jewel

If you're looking for a great place to stay in Puglia, accommodation in or around Lecce is the perfect choice. An elegant old town with beautiful old palazzos and Baroque churches, great food and a relaxed atmosphere, it's aptly named the Florence of the south.

Lecce: A Great Choice For Puglia Accommodation

Unlike its namesake, however, Lecce offers a more relaxed atmosphere (and lower prices) while maintaining the amazing historic and architectural richness that makes for great sightseeing. What makes it an even better choice as a location for Puglia accommodation is its proximity to the other towns you may want to visit: Otranto, Santa Maria de Leuca and Gallipoli. As well, Alberobello and Matera are no more than a day-trip away.

What To See In Lecce

Apart from its proximity to the nearby must-visit towns, there are still many more reasons to choose to look for your Puglia accommodation in Lecce. It boasts amazing architecture and historic charm; in fact, the old town of Lecce is considered a national treasure and a cultural capital. It is visited by students from around the country (and all over the world) to see Baroque architecture at its finest, rendered in the unique white-gold local stone called Pietra Leccese that adorns many of the houses.

Among the places to see are the Basilica di Sta. Croce with its stunning fa?ade that demonstrates a mix of religious figures and mythological creatures, and Adorno Palace nearby. There are also two full-sized Roman amphitheatres in Lecce - a monumental relic of the Roman Empire, with statues and relief renderings - as well as the Duomo and countless churches. For souvenirs, check out the interesting works of papier-mache artists.

Eating, Drinking and More In Lecce

Even those who have Puglia accommodation elsewhere find the food in Lecce a good reason to come on over! Some of the foods you shouldn't miss are the rustico leccese (a wonderfully delicious cake made of two pieces flaky pastry filled with mozzarella, bechamel sauce, tomatoes, pepper and nutmeg); puccia (a round bread studded with olives); pasticciotto (a cream-filled cake served hot); and numerous varieties of almond paste.

You may also want to check out the gourmet shops for wonderful artisanal mozzarella and ice cream. (Hint: the shops around St. Oronzo square are great places to look for this.) Good wine is also plentiful in Lecce, with the most famous being the Negramaro, the Salice Salentino and the Primitivo di Manduria.

Shopping for souvenirs is also fun, and if you visit in summer there are many great outdoor events like concerts, symphonies and more to enjoy.
